Typography: Pick a designer

Our final project for Typography was to create a brochure featuring a designer we like. It had to be a two sided brochure with a fold in the center and could not be 8.5X11. I decided to use Eduardo Recife as my feature designer. I’ve known about his site, www.misprintedtype.com for a while and I’ve always liked his style. I love old, vintage ads from the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s and he combines parts of these old ads with different design elements to create a very unique, grungy/vintage style. Typography: In-class digital painting

We had an in-class assignment in Typography where we were asked to create some kind of map, or illustrate something that showed how to get from one place to another. The design criteria were pretty loose so I wanted to create something that strayed away from anything that resembled an actual map. The assignment was due by the end of class so I had to come up with something and go for it. I knew I wanted to create something creepy and the idea of spiders and bugs crawling out of ears popped in my head so I started with that. After some quick brainstorming, I had an idea that made sense and I knew how I wanted it to look. Read the rest of this entry »

Advanced Computer Graphics: Article Design

In Advanced Computer Graphics class, we were given the assignment to select one article out of three available and design something that illustrates what the article is about. The article I chose was titled, Taking a Swipe at the Panda. The article was about a man in China protesting the release of the animated movie, Kung Fu Panda. He claimed that the movie was offensive to the Chinese culture because it deliberately associated the panda (a sacred symbol of China) with negative attributes like having green eyes and having a duck as a father. The man offended by the film wanted an apology from the studio for insulting him and the people of China. Read the rest of this entry »

Designing Computer Graphics: Museum Exhibit Postcard

The final assignment for designing computer graphics was to come up with an exhibit at a museum of our choice (fictional or real) and to create a postcard size advertisement for it. The criteria was only to have the name of the exhibit, the name of the museum and the date of the exhibit. I usually incorporate the least amount of text as possible into the design. The way I see it, the purpose of an advertisement is first and foremost to capture the attention of people. Excessive text immediately screams, “SATISFACTION GUARANTEED!,” “FUN FOR ALL!!,” “LADIES DRINK FREE TILL 10:00 PM THEN $2 WELLS AND DOMESTIC TILL MIDNIGHT!!!,” and all the other things you see on the annoying ads stuck under your windshield wipers. Advanced Computer Graphics: Really Realistic Reel. vector photo-realism

The first assignment for my Advanced Computer Graphics class was to pick a mechanical object and create a photo-realistic vector illustration of it in Illustrator. I had seen a few other students’ pieces in the previous months and one thing I noticed was Full Sail Students must really love xbox 360 because there were a ton of controllers made. Although a little overdone, they looked really great and I wasn’t sure how well I would do with this project because of my lack of Illustrator experience. On top of creating the photo-realistic mechanical object, we had to create an effective advertisement for it once completed. Read the rest of this entry »

Designing Computer Graphics: Vector Movie Poster

Designing Computer Graphics was our intro class into the computer based art software; Illustrator and Photoshop. I have had a few years of experience with Photoshop but my experience in Illustrator was next to nothing so I was excited to learn it. We were asked to recreate a movie poster in Illustrator with specific design restrictions. The poster had to either explain the movie or show it in a new light as simplistically as possible. We were also only allowed to use black, white and one other color of our choice with no gradients, shades, tints or tones. The only fonts we were allowed to use were Helvetica and Times New Roman, but we could manipulate them (to a limited extent) as we see fit. Read the rest of this entry »

DAT Composition Assignment: Tooth Town

This assignment began after a lesson in composition. We were told to create a piece based on good composition with subject matter leaning more towards abstract than realistic. We were going to create the same drawing in various mediums on 8.5X11 size canvas. Totally abstract art has never been easy for me. I feel like I can’t just create something without a story behind it. I tried a few different thumbnails going back and forth between abstract and surrealistic and I just can’t help liking something that has a story more than something that just looks pretty. So I went with this idea of looking inside a mouth where the tongue was a river, the teeth were these riverfront buildings with views over the tongue river. I liked the composition of the thumbnail and I felt like I could do something with the idea later possibly in motion graphics or something. Read the rest of this entry »

DAT Identity Campaign Assignment: Gloss Nail Salon

Our final project for Design Art & Theory class was to create an identity campaign including packaging, etc. for an assigned business. Our teacher Grace wanted the guys in the class to get feminine/neutral businesses while the girls got masculine/neutral businesses. She put a variety of different businesses in a hat and had all the guys draw out of it. My lucky draw came out to be a nail salon. The parameters were to create a logo, tagline, a 1-2 paragraph long synopsis of intended design goals, 8.5X11 magazine ad, packaging (either for the product or a brochure for a service), plus anything extra for extra credit. 20 pages of preproduction work were also required to be handed in with everything.
